Pennsylvania online casinos started 2023 by reeling off their best January on record in terms of revenue. But despite that and the fact that two operators set record highs in January, the vertical was still down, albeit slightly, from its record revenue the month before.

The state’s 18 online casinos combined to generate $29.7 million in revenue in January, according to data from the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB). Revenue was down 1.3% month-over-month ($131.9 million) but was up about 24% year-over-year ($104.9 million).

January becomes the second-highest month for revenue after December 2022 — the difference between the two was just $1.7 million.

FanDuel Grabs Second Place

Operators on the Hollywood Casino license — Barstool, BetMGM Casino PA, DraftKings Casino PA, and Hollywood Casino PA — had the most revenue in January ($54.7 million) and held a 42% market share during the month.

Revenue was down 8.4% month-over-month ($59.7 million) for the Hollywood group. But January 2023 was the group’s third-highest month on record for revenue and marked a 33.6% improvement year-over-year ($40.9 million).

Valley Forge Casino’s online casino partners — FanDuel Casino PA and Stardust Casino — generated a record $29.7 million in revenue in January, up 10.5% from December 2022 ($26.9 million) and up 45% from the year-ago month ($20.5 million).

BetRivers Casino PA, Borgata Casino PA, and SugarHouse Casino PA, all partners on the Rivers-Philadelphia license, were third as a collective group for revenue in January with $28.4 million — flat compared to the month prior (also $28.4 million) and up just 4% year-over-year ($27.3 million).

FanDuel has been the top online casino operator in Pennsylvania only once — in February 2020, it led the field with just $6 million in revenue and a 34.3% market share. It took until January 2023 for FanDuel to rank ahead of the Rivers group again in terms of revenue.

The operators on the Hollywood, Rivers, and Valley Forge licenses combined for 86.6% of the market in January, down from 87.3% in December 2022.

Mount Airy & Parx Also Up in January

Valley Forge wasn’t the only licensee to see record revenue in January. Wind Creek Casino hit a record $1.7 million, up 18.3% month-over-month ($1.5 million) and up a whopping 61.6% year-over-year ($1.1 million).

Caesars Casino PA, which operates under the Harrah’s Philadelphia Casino and Racetrack license, had its second-highest month for revenue in January ($3.2 million). Still, revenue was down 8.2% from December 2022, the operator’s record month for revenue at $3.5 million.

Among the smaller online casino operators that saw revenue increases, Parx Casino PA climbed 6.6% month-to-month to reach $4 million in January. Meanwhile, operators on the Mount Airy Casino Resort license — FOX Bet and PokerStars Casino PA — grossed $3 million in January, up 10.2% month-over-month ($2.8 million).

On the Mohegan Sun Pocono license, Mohegan Casino PA was up 4.1% in January ($2.2 million).

Operators on the Live! Casino license — Betway and PlayLive! Casino — saw revenue slip 1.3% to $3.1 million in January, but it was still the operator’s fifth-highest month for revenue.

Online casino revenue through the Presque Isle Downs & Casino was also down 19.8% month-over-month to hit $193k in January. UK-based bet365 is preparing to replace TwinSpires Casino PA as Presque Isle’s online casino partner.
